We were lucky enough to catch up with designer June Sohn to find out what the future holds for her outwear brand Jungwon. June Sohn has a BFA degree in Fashion Design from Parsons in New York. She worked at Guess in outerwear for 4 years, was the brand manager of organic products for 3 years, and the Brand Director at SOHNSOHN for 3 years, before launching her own brands “Tank Citi” and “JUNGWON”.
Jungwon design functional jackets that are breathable, waterproof, windproof, and practical enough to go with any occasion.
Why did you decide to become a fashion designer? When I was in elementary school, I used to go to my mother’s favorite boutique store with her to get custom-made clothes. Ever since then I wanted to become a designer. I guess I enjoyed wearing different clothes back then, and watching how the fabric was chosen. I wanted to also enjoy this in creating my own clothes.
What’s it like being in the fashion industry? It’s my steroid, full excitement, and peace in my mind.
How would you describe your brand? Whenyou wear my jacket, it is like being like an invincible and durable tank in the city.
What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far? My first runway show last year, everything was new and not quite perfect though it was simply a great feeling to come out to the public and show them my ideas.
What is the inspiration behind your collection? I get an inspiration from men’s outerwear, especially a Korean men’s outerwear costume called “Dooroomakee”. It’s very clean, simple, comfortable, and powerful outerwear. Last Year my entire collection and this year’s FW14 first look with cape takes inspiration from this.
Describe your ideal consumer. Simply professional career women, who have busy and global life styles. That’s why I always think about easy care such as machine washing, no necessary ironing, very light, packable and small.
What is your favorite piece and why? My first look in the Nolcha Fashion Week: New York FW14 runway show with the detachable cape. The cape is a fun piece and I make it different every year. Also the jackets I design have became my signature piece.
If you could have any celebrity spokes model, who would it be and why? I would love someone inspirational and powerful in their field such as Hillary R Clinton and Melinda Gates.
What store would you love to have your clothes in? I would love to have my own outerwear store. I would name it “TANK CITI”.
What does 2014 hold for the brand? Last year I made a statement to show who I am and how breathable waterproof outerwear can make an impact in our livers. This year I aim to make my designs more than just outerwear ‘The one jacket you really need in the city’/ I added a stretch function and developed it into the three layer fabric. I think it completes the package making it breathable, waterproof, windproof, stretchy and easy care outerwear.
