This week the Nolcha Shows team had the opportunity to catch up with Yenifer Lam, co-founder of hand woven luxury accessories brand EL VOYAGE, to discuss more about the business and upcoming plans.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER
We love traveling and connecting with others through life experiences. After working in the fashion industry for years, we do not want to create mass production items without quality and uniqueness. It was clear we would design and create pieces of art that you can enjoy day to day from wearing to drinking them.
What happened to beauty of uniqueness, individuality and quality? Are we to conform with what the world offers today or shall we create our own? With each EL VOYAGE piece, comes a bit of culture, history, architecture, taste and above all a bit of the people we meet and work with from the different areas in Guatemala and around the world.
We do hope you get to experience the art of living and giving, through our handcrafted weavings and coffee made specially for you!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND?
We say EL VOYAGE brings beauty and culture to our daily life; through the art of living and giving! Come and experiencing excellence for yourself.
We work with Guatemalan based Flori Can, a Mayan weaver who had a childhood dream of helping her family and community, who employs more than 100 community members that are living custodians of beautiful and ancient artisan skills. Together we create unique and exquisite works of art, a delight in aesthetics and product quality. Flori’s work is creating an economic revival for her people and bringing the beauty of Mayan art to a global community. Flori’s mission has become EL VOYAGE’S mission, helping with product branding, distribution and sales through our network. Weaving modern opportunities through traditional techniques.
WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE BEING IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
I think there are always challenges to overcome. They just evolve due to consumer’s perception and demands. There is saturation of brands in all areas, the world is a global market today and while widens your outreach, it also brings challenges in distribution. Logistics for brands worldwide, are very expensive unless you move mass quantities.
In addition the masses these days seems to be more interested in constantly “NEW” things. But the demand is for “cheap and new”; instead of “beauty and quality”. So to gain brand recognition it requires to venture out from the traditional strategies, in order to stand out and gain recognition.
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION FROM WHEN CREATING YOUR NEW COLLECTIONS?
My inspiration comes from everywhere, mood is definitely a big influence, places we visit, food and people. Truth is inspiration is in every little detail of our daily life.
WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE?
My relationship with God provides me with inner peace; which allows me to let go, allowing me to go to a higher place, enabling me to connect with nature and life’s beauty in all its splendour. Color stories and patterns follow!
WHAT DOES 2016 HOLD FOR THE BRAND?
This year is exciting! Our new collection is coming out this month, inspired by the calm sea or the Caribbean and the outdoor beach life style.
We continue to promote EL VOYGAE in UK and US. Later this month we will be part of the Blogger’s Ball in London, and in September part of the Nolcha Shows Fashion Media Lounge.
