Jody Bell Ones to Watch
This week the Nolcha Shows team had the opportunity to catch up with independent womenswear and accessories designer Jody Bell to find out what 2016 has instore for the brand.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER
I have been designing and making clothes for myself for as long as I can remember which grew into producing couture pieces for private clients. Launching the Jody Bell ready to wear line is the natural extension of that creativity and was partly prompted by my clients and people close to me who suggested that I should launch my own brand. Now many more women can experience the pleasure of wearing our beautiful fabrics and very feminine and original garments.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND?
Elegant, versatile, luxurious, yet wearable. Designs that turn heads.
WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE BEING IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
The fashion industry as a whole is facing a number of exceptional challenges at the present time. Sadly because inhumane and environmental bad practice exists in the production of many of our clothes today – clothes which many of us casually buy and wear. I really wish the industry could slow right down.
I hope that forward thinking independent brands such as my own which are focussed on individuality and artisanal skill will do increasingly well in the future. As such, I am committed to producing garments that will be worn many times and stand the test of time, rather than becoming quickly obsolete only to be thrown away to be landfilled after a single season.
I also believe that if you provide quality and value for money with designs that are desirable you will survive.
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION FROM WHEN CREATING YOUR NEW COLLECTIONS?
Every fashion designer watches out for the latest collections from top designers and to an extent we all absorb one another’s ideas. However, I am mainly inspired by travel and different cultures while.Living here on one of the most attractive coastlines in Spain …. It’s very easy to find inspiration, in the architecture, landscape, the colours and of course the light. I’m extremely lucky!
WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE?
My biggest influences are the ‘First Ladies’ such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. Following on, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford remain some of my favourite style icons. They have aged so gracefully and always look comfortable in their own skin. With regards to designers and brands, I have enormous admiration for Stella McCartney and adore Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and Chloe.
WHAT DOES 2016 HOLD FOR THE BRAND?
2016 is the start of something very special for Jody Bell. We’ve already had enormous interest from some high profile women who we are dressing for television, music events and the red carpet. We have interest in the brand story from television too and will be involved with some shows. Throughout the year my award winning team will be filming at the Cannes Film Festival, at sporting events like Ascot, as well as in some glamourous Mediterranean locations. We hope to get noticed not only for our designs but also for our originality and solid brand development.
However, we favour organic growth and the development of long standing relationships over rapid expansion, and as a result, we are committed to building deep foundations for the brand as we expect Jody Bell to be around for a lifetime.
