Ones to Watch – 3Seven&8

May 21, 2014

This week we caught up with Christopher Belt, the designer behind accessories brand 3Seven&8 .  3Seven&8 offer a product that is timeless, while still incorporating hints of trends that won’t be awkward after the trend is over.  The collection embodies a daring, contemporary lifestyle.

Christopher BeltWhy did you decide to become an Accessory designer?  Growing up I always loved to alter garments or decorate them with paint or embellishments. I’ve always been involved in the arts, more specifically than fashion. As a child I found almost anything could be used as a medium. I discovered what is so special about garments and accessories; you can express yourself with what you put on your body. When I was 16 years old I created and sold custom shoes for girls that I went to school with by purchasing diffusion shoes that already fit them at the mall and enveloping them with carefully sculpted materials from soda cans. Each girl wanted a different brand of soda for her custom shoes to let the world know, for example that she was “Diet Cherry Coke.”

What’s it like being in the fashion industry?  It is a rapid environment with an emphasis on revenue and detail. When an opportunity comes up you have to act quickly if it is something you want. If you are extended an offer and you wait until tomorrow to bang out the details it’s a chance you could lose. You have to take that phone call that is coming in during a nice dinner or while you are at the theatre because the person calling may find someone else’s product by the time you are finished.

How would you describe your brand? The 3Seven&8 collection embodies a daring, contemporary lifestyle. I aim to incorporate provocative yet playful lines with bold silhouettes inspired by architecture with feminine and organic lines. The rare, luxurious Italian leathers at a contemporary price make 3Seven&8 an extraordinary find across the globe. These interchangeable designs assist the modern woman’s passage through various locations, situations, and occasions in an exquisite way.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?  For me it has been the opportunity to design 3Seven&8.

What is the inspiration behind your Lorenza bag? I would like to talk about the inspiration behind the Lorenza bag. The entire collection focuses on the architecture of Antoni Gaudi. For this piece I took the weaving details from the Gaudi House’s balconies. If you look at the building you notice beautiful twisted columns on the safety ledges.

Describe your ideal consumer.  The collection is inspired by all of the brilliant and driven women in my life who have always longed for a product that epitomizes both empowerment and glamor. This collection is for the woman who lives for handbags. That is why there is so much focus on offering luxury materials and details at a fair price. She could be a wealthy woman who owns the entire collection or she could be the average woman who buys a piece every season. Either way her look will always be luxurious mattering not if she is in a ball gown or jeans and a t-shirt.

What is your favourite piece and why? My favorite piece is Elisabeta because it embodies not just 3S8, but who I am as a designer. This is my go-to bag because there are so many interior options for storing my items and the ones I use several times a day are always in the front pocket which is easily accessible.

If you could have any celebrity spokesmodel, who would it be and why?  Our celebrity spokesmodel would be someone who represents the every woman. Someone who is known on every continent who’s life provides an outlet for escape from the monotony of our daily living. Just like our handbags.

What store would you love to have your accessories in? Bloomingdales.

What does 2014 hold for the brand? 2014 is going to be a big year for 3S8. The SS14 Collection is the debut collection. The Fall has a similar look and feel featuring new styles and brand new colors. From the customers point of view seeing the second collection should portray what our legacy is going to be.
