Baxter Designs

We had the chance to catch up with handbag designer Amy Baxter of Baxter designs to discuss her collection and to find out what is next for the brand!  Baxter Designs started as a high end designer workroom in Philadelphia in 2004. They served residential clients as well as the Park Hyatt, Sofitel Hotel, and many Philadelphia Designers. The brand now exclusively manufacture handbags and decorative pillows.

Amy Baxter Head Shot1. Why did you decide to become a fashion designer? I was running my own high end interior design workroom in Philadelphia and started making tote bags for my designers from some of the incredible interior fabrics, and a uniquely beautiful handbag was the end result. I couldn’t walk away from this creation.

2. What’s it like being in the fashion industry? It is very fast pace and competitive. The interior industry changes its look every 2-3 yrs. Fashion is constantly changing. However, if your design includes classic lines and elegance, you can last beyond changing trends.

3. How would you describe your brand? Handbags with simple clean lines combined with bold tactile colors and prints. Ultimately practical to use yet luxurious look and feel.

4. What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far? Baxter Designs won an accessories competition through Belk Department Stores and was prominently displayed in 41 stores throughout the south in 2013.

5. What is the inspiration behind large signature tote bag? The Large Signature Tote was what started it all. The fabric for the tote may change, but the practical shape and size is what I created for interior designers to carry to their clients appointments. It has an incredible look created by the high end interior designer fabrics, and can carry anything under the sun. For me, any inspiration has to be ultimately practical or it will not be used.

6. Describe your ideal consumer. My customer is one who likes a unique quality product who is not always concerned with well known brands. If it is beautifully crafted and useful, then it will be cherished and appreciated.

7. What is your favorite piece and why? The Small Tote is my favorite. I carry it every day. I put a clutch size purse inside it to grab if that is all I need to run into a store. But it also carries extra items as well (sunglasses, hair brush, etc.). The unique exterior fabric is an attention grabber. I get comments about it everywhere.

8. If you could have any celebrity spokesmodel, who would it be and why? I would pick Sandra Bullock. She has managed her image well with a classic style.

9. What store would you love to have your handbags in? The Ideal place would be Barneys NY. That is where uniqueness is celebrated.

10. What does 2014 hold for the brand? Baxter Designs target is resort boutiques and prominent cities as well as expanding to more boutiques online. We are in Manhattan, Thousand Islands, NY, St. Augustine Florida, as well as online e-bags, Her Secret Vault, and Secret ‘Dor located in England.

Since I started this Handbag line, I have felt more creative than in all the years making product for the home. Walking into a fabric design center is like walking into a private candy store that is invitation only, and I get to sneak out with some goodies to share with everyone!
