In honor of Earth Day we caught up with eco independent fashion designer Yenifer Lam of Glocal Connection/El Voyage. Msglocal by Glocal Connection was started by two girls with global roots; infused with the love of travel and fashion; a desire to empower others and to make the world a better place for all who inhabit it. They help sustain communities of artisans in developing markets; by developing innovative business practices and providing a platform to sell their products.
Why did you decide to become a fashion designer? I say it was our global roots infused with the love of travel and fashion; a desire to empower others and to make the world a better place for all who inhabit it. This needs removed or the opening paragraph as its exactly the same word for word
What’s it like being in the fashion industry? At first exciting, then you discover it is not as glamorous as you might think. However like anything else in life, if you love what you do it will be an amazing ride. The journey is certainly worth it; we have met amazing people, made great friends and there is never a dull moment. Being in the fashion industry is like being in a theatre as there is always the next show to prepare for.
How would you describe your brand? So confusing as the above talks about Ms Glocal, Glocal Connections and El Voyage. One brand needs to be selected to focus the readers on. El Voyage is a collection but you ask about the overall brand EL VOYAGE is a collection where style and quality are one; our products are for the world traveller – whether you are a first class jet-setter or a backpacking adventurer. EL VOYAGE invites you to join our journey of exploring the beauty of life. EL VOYAGE is aboutthe art of living and giving; experiencing excellence every day.
Our weaving art and coffee, is a lifestyle brand carefully curated for an international audience with superb care to detail; from concept to delivery. Every detail is executed meticulously from conception; design, choosing raw materials, quality and packaging culminating in delivering art to our customer.
What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far? There has been several…but if we need to choose one; I say launching EL VOYAGE. After working for years with communities our vision is shaping into the eclectic brand that is tailored to support economic development and bring awareness to the history behind the products. Our dream is becoming a reality.
What is the inspiration behind the Unisex Feather Jaspe Weaving? We love art and each piece represents that; our designs are made by artisans that create each piece utilizing ancient techniques; that are brought to life for your use and delight. Beyond the art of designing and creating is the ability to help others transform their lives by developing modern opportunities through traditional techniques.
Take this piece and its design Jaspe, a traditional pattern used for cortes (skirts) used by Mayan women; now you can have a pattern design for a scarf or a table runner… our imagination is the only limit.
Describe your ideal consumer. A seasoned traveller, a life lover, a conscious person of their surroundings and others. You are creating your own panache desiring to experience excellence every day.
What is your favorite piece and why? EL VOYAGE weaving: We lead a fast pace life and at times we move around a lot – whether from aeroplane, train or bus and this weaving becomes my scarf, my jacket, my statement piece and at times my blanket. I love it! So when we design we think of you and the lifestyle you lead.

What does 2014 hold for the brand? Glocal Connection has launched its own brand EL VOYAGE. Our mission continues to support the artisans we work with while expanding US sales. The Pop-up store was a success so we are looking to open a permanent retail space; and we want to add leather goods and organic hot chocolate to our EL VOYAGE collection.
