Ones to Watch – Maison De Papillon

Our Ones to Watch feature is a weekly interview highlighting an independent fashion designer that is making moves in the fashion industry.

We caught up with Danielle and Shriya of Maison De Papillon to discuss their latest collection and plans for the brands future.  Founder Danielle Salinas and partner Shriya Bisht are a fascinating combination. The two worlds of Texas and India met while attending Parsons The New School of Fashion Design in NYC.  They didn’t start out as fashion designers but as successful business women determined to create a luxury collection that is comfortable to sleep and travel in while never losing its unique elegant style. This concept didn’t exist in the market and their collaboration was born.

 

Why did you decideDesigners profile picture (1) to become a fashion designer? Danielle – I felt there was a gap in fashion that needed to be addressed. Women juggle so much and being comfortable but fashionable was something that was lacking.

Shriya – I am an artist and believe fashion is an art. Personally, it is another way I can experiment with art.

What’s it like being in the fashion industry? Danielle – Fashion moves at the speed of light. As a designer it is extremely important to keep it fresh and stay ahead with color, social moods and industry needs. It is a pressure that creates magic from season to season.

Shriya – It’s a dream come true. It is not very easy to be a part of the industry but I love everything about it.

How would you describe your brand?  Our brand is a hybrid brand. We do not belong in just one section of a store. We are a cross between Ready to wear, sleepwear, travel wear and lounge wear. Yes, we are all those wears rolled up into one. We say we are a collection that can be worn from the boudoir to the boardroom.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?  Danielle – We have been scouted by some of the industry’s best buying researchers. To hear from them that we are doing a great job around the board makes us very proud.

Shriya – The biggest highlight is yet to come . However, the day I saw my designs transform into real garments and then see them modelled during New York Fashion Week was a highlight.

Tell us about the inspiration behind a piece of your choice. Danielle – The Amy is the universal camisole. She is classic, elegant, yet always demure with the Peter Pan collar. The inspiration was to give woman on the “go” pieces that can be as versatile as her.

Shriya – The scarf print in luxurious cashmere was an actual art piece I rendered while I was on a beach vacation. The art piece inspired me to design the scarves in its image.

Describe your ideal consumer.  She is a women who juggles many lives, many worlds, and is comfortable in the kitchen as she in the boardroom. She is at a school function for her kids before she is flying across the world for business. She is the woman who needs comfort but she always wants to be ready for an opportunity to impress, knowing judgement is first had by first impressions. Maison de Papillon will always be perceived as classic, elegant and worldly.

What is your favourite piece and why? Danielle – Mitch is so classy! She looks stunning with pencil skirts, leather pants, leggings, under suits, and divine to sleep in. She is perfection.

Shriya – The cashmere robe is a classic elegance.

 If you could have any celebrity spokesmodel, who would it be and why? Danielle – Cate Blanchett would be my personal choice as Maison de Papillon’s spokes model because she epitomizes elegance.

Shriya – Marion Cottilard. She is elegance personified!

What store would you love to have your clothes in? Bergdorf Goodman. We are all about New York. Creating and producing in the garment district. We would love to have our collection build a home in Bergdorf one day soon.

 What does 2014 hold for the brand? Perfecting what the world travelling woman needs to make her life comfortable, easy but always with style.
