Ones to Watch – Mimi Tran

July 30, 2014

The Nolcha Fashion Week: New York team had the chance to catch up with independent fashion designer Mimi Tran this week.  Mimi Tran is set to showcase her SS15 collection at Nolcha Fashion Week: New York this September.

Mimi Tran grew up in Paris with a strong artistic gift and was surrounded  by fashion designers and models at a very young age. Because of this she developed a  critical eye for color texture and design which has given her the ability to create pieces as unique as the women that wear them.  Mimi believes that every dress a woman wears should communicate and accentuate her personality.

mimitranheadshotWhy did you decide to become a fashion designer? I have always been a creative person. As a child my gifts were noticed at my school in Paris and I was encouraged to pursue the arts. I was afraid to end up a pauper so instead I stuck on the main track, eventually earned degrees in Electrical Engineering and International business. Last year I lost a good friend to cancer and one of the last things he told me was not to waste life, to pursue my dreams and passions. A few months later I began to design.

What’s it like being in the fashion industry? Crazy. Fascinating but at the same time it’s scary. You’re afraid that the collection you’re working so hard on might not hit it.  Fascinating because you work on something that you know people are going to wear and you are contributing to fashion history.

How would you describe your brand? Our brand is the example of the classic beauty, the sensual femininity and the conservative at the same time. Our design is not just one thing it’s three things at once: Classic, sexy, and conservative.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far? Paris. Paris gave us a very clear vision to what the difference is between US style and European style. As a designer with the history that I came from, I am able to combine those two together.

What is the inspiration behind your Classic Hollywood Luxury dress? Classic Hollywood luxury… that dress … when I designed that dress basically, I grew up listening to old jazz, watching old moves, “Casablanca,” etc.. and have been very inspired by that part of history. That dress starts with a classic silhouette but the details and cut make it sensual for the modern woman.

Describe your ideal consumer.  Our ideal consumer is a sophisticated and ambitious woman. She is confident and sexy. She know what she wants and she’s on the path to getting it.

What is your favourite piece and why? My favorite is the one described above.

If you could have any celebrity spokesmodel, who would it be and why? There isn’t really any one celebrity that comes to mind, however, I’d like to see some of the Victoria’s Secret models wearing my pieces. I’ve always been a fan of the VS Fashion show and envision my gowns on glamorous women like them.

What store would you love to have your clothes in? Saks Fifth or Neiman Marcus

What does 2014 hold for the brand? 2014 will be huge for our company. Our first showing in New York will be this collection and we’re hoping to extend in to Paris fashion week for the first time, too. This season also represents our first unified and coherent collections. Previously we had been producing a number of beautiful on-offs. Each piece on its own had a personality and a style but didn’t form a coherent collection when shown together.
