Ones to Watch – Naveda

April 2, 2014

Our Ones to Watch feature is a weekly interview highlighting an independent fashion designer that is making moves in the fashion industry.

We had the chance to talk to Amy Devan about her brand Naveda and their latest collection.  After completing her MBA in 2006, Amy Devan went on to work in marketing and sales among various industries. Though grateful for every opportunity and path crossed, she had always been a creative spirit and ultimately decided to follow her childhood dream of design.  Upon returning from a month long trip to India, Amy felt more inspired than ever before, she moved to New York City to attend Parsons – The New School for Design. From that point, Naveda was born and the rest is history!

NavedaWhy did you decide to become a fashion designer? This is actually my second career. I completed my MBA in 2006 and went on to work in marketing and business development for several years. I had always been a creative spirit, sketching and drawn to all things art and fashion since as long as I can remember. It has always been a part of my life and something that brought me pure happiness…it was my escape. I knew this would continue to be a huge part of my life in the future as well…it was just a matter of timing. Finally, one day (about a year and a half ago), I started to re-evaluate my life and found that I simply couldn’t shake this passion for design. I had to go after this dream – now or never. That said, I left my job in Chicago, moved to New York City to attend Parsons – The New School and began to lay down the foundation of NavedaTM. Of course starting a business (especially in this field) involves endless hours of work and many, many sleepless nights, but I don’t regret one minute! I truly love what I do…I literally dream of design and I’m blessed to be able to follow my passion.

What’s it like being in the fashion industry? In a word – invigorating! This is an exciting industry that is extremely fast paced. Every day, I am around creative people that have chosen art and fashion to express their feeling, passion and soul…that’s incredibly inspiring and moving!

How would you describe your brand? NavedaTM is about creating luxury for the free-spirited woman with an haute sense of style and personality.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far? As a brand, we are relatively young and truly every single day brings something exciting and new! I’d have to say being able to present NavedaTM at New York Fashion Week within our very first year has been one of our biggest highlights! I’m thrilled to announce we will be part of London Fashion Week in September 2014 as well! Big things to come!

What is the inspiration behind (pick particular piece from your collection rather than whole collection)? One of my personal favorites from our Fall/Winter 2014 collection is our Beaded Pencil Skirt, which is entirely hand-beaded. The inspiration behind this particular piece was the intricacies of palatial architecture. The gold beading is strategically placed to mirror the royal windows and gates of an exotic, old-world palace. I draw a lot of inspiration in general from art and architecture from around the world and this piece is no different.

Describe your ideal consumer. We relate to and design for women who love and appreciate art and travel. The NavedaTM woman is creative, an independent thinker, uninhibited, spiritual and professional. She has a subtle sensuality to her and NavedaTM brings an element of exotic influence to her wardrobe that can be paired with virtually anything in her closet.

What is your favourite piece and why? I have 2 favorites from this collection – one is the Beaded Pencil Skirt as mentioned above and the second is our Wide Legged Palazzo Pants, made in pure silk crepe. Each of these pieces are so versatile and could be paired with so many tops in one’s wardrobe. Imagine the beaded pencil skirt with ankle booties or sexy stilettos, a basic white cami and a long, boxy blazer or even a boho-esgue floppy hat. Now take the palazzo pants and pair it with a blouse or tank already in your closet and some killer pumps – it’s effortlessly chic (and we haven’t even talked about how the silk feels on your skin…pure luxury)!

If you could have any celebrity spokesmodel, who would it be and why? I would have to say Sarah Jessica Parker or Nicole Richie…each fashion maven has her own distinct style, but both have this unbelievable way of meshing glamour with eclectic elements which I love love love!

What store would you love to have your clothes in? I could see our pieces in Neiman Marcus, Bergdorfs, and Bloomingdale’s but also in Scoop-NYC!

What does 2014 hold for the brand? 2014 is a big year for us! We have London Fashion Week to look forward to in September. Beyond that, this year is focused on sales and distribution from a global perspective. Can’t wait for all of the exciting things to come.

Design is about creating style that matches your innermost feelings, passion, how you see yourself as well as how you want to be seen…what an amazing process to be part of! Thanking my lucky stars everyday that I get to do what I love most!
