Ones to Watch – Veritee Hill

December 10, 2014

After winning Project Subway 2014 held during New York Fashion Week, the Nolcha Fashion Week: New York team could not wait to catch up with independent fashion designer Veritee Hill to see what she has in-store and what 2015 holds for her brand.

VeriteeHillMuffinSwirlWhy did you decide to become a fashion designer? My Mum made all my clothes for me as a little girl, so I grew up with the sound of the sewing machine. As I grew older and developed my own sense of style I tried making my own clothes, I was absolutely awful. However, it was something that I was determined master. I realized that I could combine my love of drawing/painting and sculpture into making clothes and it was a way to express myself. I owe my love of designing and sewing all to my Mum.

What’s it like being in the fashion industry? Just like any other industry it has it’s pros and cons. I have met and worked with so many talented people and have been involved in some wonderful projects. It is definitely a very competitive industry and it is very easy to doubt yourself. However I truly believe that if you stay true to yourself as a person and designer then fate shall look kindly on you.

How would you describe your brand? I would like to think that my designs are feminine with a dramatic edge. The majority of my pieces are very detailed with a lot of hand sewn elements.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far? I am very proud of the project that I am working on at the moment which is making costumes for Crispin Glover’s third feature film which he wrote, directs and stars in. As much as I love putting on runway shows and having pieces featured in editorials, I also really enjoy working on films. It is a great honour to work with someone who you have admired for so many years.

Describe your ideal consumer. My ideal consumer is someone who is not afraid to stand out from the crowd. They are confident, sexy, have a sense of class and like to draw attention.

What is your favourite piece and why? One of my favourite pieces is a black metallic woven brocade corset with patent leather bone casing with silver and gunmetal chains. It is a great statement piece.

If you could have any celebrity spokesmodel, who would it be and why? It would be an absolute honour to have Daphne Guinness wear my clothing. She is such a unique striking beauty who is not afraid to experiment and push the boundaries with fashion, art and music.

What store would you love to have your clothes in? It has always been a dream of mine to have my clothes in Bergdorf Goodman. It would be an honour to have my pieces along side some of the greatest designers in the world. I sometimes feel that it is more like a museum or gallery than a shop, you are not just looking at clothing but at works of art.

What does 2015 hold for the brand? I plan to launch a separate collection of my headpieces as I truly enjoy working on these. I am also working on a collection to show during NYFW in February which shall feature more of my corsetry and gowns utilizing techniques that I have never worked with before, so I am very excited.
